Sauna etiquette that matters

Wash before you enter. This is the rule that actually matters. Sweat from the street does not belong on the bench. A quick rinse is the difference between a room people trust and a room they endure.

Sit on a towel. Keep your voice at the volume of the room you walked into. If everyone is quiet, stay quiet. Phones stay outside. A speaker is a reason for someone to leave, and they will be right.

Do not stare. Do not stretch across three people’s bench. Move in and out of the door quickly so the heat stays in the room.

Water on the stones changes the room for everyone. A small ladle is a courtesy. A bucket is a speech. In a banya, venik work needs space and a yes from the people beside you.

If you are unsure, copy the regulars for one round. Public heat is a borrowed room. Leave it as easy as you found it.
