What to bring to a public sauna

The short packing list for a public sauna, bathhouse, or Korean spa, and the things that should stay home.

Bring

A swimsuit unless the house is textile-free and you are comfortable with that. A towel, even if they rent one. Sandals. A water bottle. A change of clothes for the exit, because you will not want to put the arrival outfit back on.

A second towel to sit on is the polite move in a shared stove room. Some baths provide it. Assume they do not.

Leave

Lotions, oils, makeup, and spray deodorant do not belong in the heat. Jewelry that can burn should come off. A laptop is a joke that people still attempt in the lobby. Valuables stay home or in the locker, and the locker is not a safe.

Do not bring a guest who has been drinking hard. Heat and alcohol is how visits end early.

If the listing is thin

Phone the venue. The number is on the listing when we have it. Ask whether day passes exist, whether swimsuits are required, and whether the cold plunge is open. Those three answers decide the visit more than the star rating.
