How to use a cold plunge

A plain method for the cold plunge after a sauna: how long, how to breathe, and when to skip it.

After the heat, not instead of it

The plunge is the second half of a hot room. You are already warm. You step in, you breathe out, and you stay for a short count. Thirty to ninety seconds is plenty for almost everyone. A personal record is not the product.

Exhale as the water hits your chest. The gasp is normal. The panic fades if you stay with the exhale. Get out while you still feel sharp, not when your hands stop working.

Then do nothing

Sit. Let the shiver pass. Drink water. The rest between rounds is the part people skip, and it is why the second round feels worse than the first. Ten minutes in a chair is a correct use of the building.

Skip the plunge if you are pregnant, if you have a heart condition your doctor has already warned you about, or if you came in to prove something. A cool shower is a complete ending to a round.

Finding one

On a city page, rooms that mention a plunge in the name or the amenity list are called out in the introduction. Open the listing before you go. A “cold plunge” at one studio is a stock tank. At a spa club it is a pool. Both count. They are not the same soak.
